The Project: A Backyard Rebuilt for Cooking and Gathering

Jeremy and Mickey loved their backyard, but the old outdoor kitchen and patio structures no longer matched it. Papaya Construction Group removed the existing pergola, patio covers and kitchen, then built four new patio structures and a custom outdoor kitchen.

The work took about five business weeks and was completed in July 2026. The project cost $175,000.

Four Patio Covers With One Design

All four structures share the same look, so the yard reads as one space. Each one sits on new reinforced concrete footings with 8×8 fiberglass posts and architectural double beams, finished in black. The insulated covers use Alumawood 3-inch insulated roof panels, with a composite wood-grain ceiling underneath. The ceiling looks like warm wood but is not real wood, so it needs no staining or sealing.

Main Backyard Attached Patio Cover (about 360 sq ft)

This insulated cover attaches to the house and shades the main sitting area. We sealed the connection to the residence, framed in two skylights and wired four lights on one switch. Two of the owners’ existing fans went back up under the new roof.

Side-Yard Insulated Patio Cover (about 280 sq ft)

The side yard got a solid insulated cover within its existing footprint. One skylight lets daylight through. We added two lights and a switch and reinstalled one of the owners’ fans.

Lattice Pergola by the Pool (about 220 sq ft)

On the right side of the backyard, a black lattice pergola gives filtered shade over a lounge area next to the pool. It has four 8×8 posts, two lights, a switch and a reinstalled fan. We patched the concrete around each post after installation.

Outdoor Kitchen Patio Cover (about 250 sq ft)

The kitchen sits under its own insulated cover, carried by two posts, a double beam and a structural C-beam. It has the same wood-grain ceiling, two lights and a new ceiling fan.

A Custom Outdoor Kitchen Built on a New Foundation

We demolished the old outdoor kitchen down to its base. The crew compacted the ground, set reinforcing steel and poured a new concrete foundation. The kitchen walls, bar and appliance openings are reinforced CMU block, sized to the owners’ appliance specifications.

Granite runs about 26 linear feet across the grill counter and the long bar. The bar seats a full row of guests facing the cook. Behind the grills, a travertine feature wall adds natural stone texture. The kitchen connects to the home’s existing gas, water, electrical and drainage lines, and we installed the owners’ grills, sink and storage drawers.

Why Insulated Patio Covers Suit an Outdoor Kitchen

An insulated patio cover keeps the space under it cooler than an open pergola and keeps rain off the counters. The foam core in each panel blocks the sun’s heat, which matters in Yorba Linda summers.

Lattice works better where you want light and air, like a lounge by the pool. This yard uses both: solid covers where people cook and eat, and lattice where they relax. Lights over every structure make the kitchen safe to use after dark.

What the Homeowners Said

“This is so much better than what we even had thought we wanted.” (Jeremy and Mickey)

Jeremy and Mickey brought inspiration photos to the first meeting. They credit the result to daily updates, a shared group chat and photo sharing throughout the job. When issues came up, the team solved them and kept the project within their budget. In their words, the finished yard kept their vision and made it “more premium than even we anticipated.” Watch their full reaction in the video at the top of this page.

The Finished Backyard

The finished yard ties the kitchen, the covered seating and the pool lounge together with the same black posts and beams.

Outdoor Kitchen and Patio Cover Questions

This Yorba Linda project cost $175,000 for a custom outdoor kitchen and four patio structures totaling about 1,110 square feet. A single kitchen under one cover usually costs less. Size, materials, appliances and utility connections drive the price, so we quote every project after a site visit.

This one took about five business weeks from demolition to final walkthrough. Smaller projects move faster. Appliance delivery dates can affect the schedule.

An insulated patio cover has a solid roof with a foam core that blocks heat and rain. A lattice patio cover has open slats that give partial shade and let air through. Insulated covers suit kitchens and dining areas. Lattice suits lounges and spaces near a pool.

The City of Yorba Linda publishes requirements for new pre-engineered metal patio covers. Read the city’s patio cover handout before you plan one, and ask us what your project needs.

Yes. Granite is a natural stone that handles sun and heat well. Seal it periodically to resist stains.

Papaya Construction rebuilt our second story deck with Trex and we’re really happy with how everything turned out. The crew did a great job, everything feels solid and the finish looks really clean. They kept us updated throughout the project and were easy to communicate with whenever we had questions. It took a little longer than we first expected, but I’d rather have it done right than rushed. Overall very happy with the deck and would definetly recommend them.

I was working with Ben and Ron from Papaya and the experience was marvelous. Always on time, committed, good communication. They did our bathroom in less than 2 weeks with permit, which is very rare in this industry. Highly recommended! Will use them again for sure. Juan from Huntington Beach.
